Getting to Know Brussels
Belgium has been a center of international trade for centuries, which contributes to Brussels’ reputation as a city of diverse culture and new ideas. Belgium has something for everyone, unique museums, historic architecture, 650 styles of beers and more than 2,000 chocolate shops.
The capital city and host of the 2011 World Congress, Brussels is home to the European Union (EU), an economic and political partnership between 27 European countries. The EU headquarters attracts delegates from throughout the continent, making Brussels the center of European international relations. As international young active citizens, JCI members are invested in cross-cultural collaboration, which makes Brussels the perfect environment for sharing global ideas.
Engaging JCI Members and the Community
Every year at Congress, delegates participate in a variety of programs, events and discussions, providing a venue for finding creative solutions to community challenges.
This year, one day of Congress will be open to the public, allowing anyone to get a taste of JCI, our Mission and the passion of our members about creating positive change. A variety of speakers, panels and forums will focus on relevant topics such as sustainability, the “blue economy,” tackling urban growth challenges and combating global poverty. Speakers from JCI partners including the
UN Foundation and the
UN Global Compact will discuss Corporate Social Responsibility and how sustainable business practices can contribute to a better world. These speakers and unique conversations will allow young active citizens and community members to work together on targeted solutions and concrete actions to address the root of global challenges.
This day will conclude with
JCI CYEA, an international award designed to recognize outstanding young entrepreneurs, sponsored by the Flanders District of Creativity. Three finalists will present their sustainable, creative business endeavors to the panel of judges that will select the winner.
